Reflection on Our Eyes

Prolog  : she was so happy with the new situation, although actually it could be a nightmare for her.

            

            According to Gathan Agasstya, rain was about all he could take those real pictures with his camera clearly. When all of above seems frankly. He did not like those things called lies.

            According to Iridesca Maya, rain was about she could feel all her sensory tools functioned well. When she could know at the outside were all wet without had to force the fact, which she could not see them.

**

            Gathan Agasstya lived with her one and only older sister, because he had his scholarship to be done at this town when his sister lived here to do her work. Their mom lived at the other town while their dad was on his work at Singapore.

“The place you were recommending to fix my camera was really jaded. It has been a week and I still could not take a picture of anything. Whereas in this week I just found so many interesting things on the road, at the campus, and at…” Gathan stopped his sentence and tried to remember something.

“At…?” Hanna, his sister rolled her eyes.

“At the space under the bridge!”

“What?!” Hanna almost could not reach her voice, “did you mean all about those shabby beggars? Not interested at all.” 

            “Obviously no! I will tell you about that someday.”

            “Is it about a girl?” Hanna winked at her little brother.

            Gathan turned his eyes to Hanna and rise his shoulders and smiled secretly.

            He mumbled slowly, “I have to see her again tomorrow!”

“Iridesca.” Her mom called Iridesca while she stood at the door, “take care.”

Iridesca turned around and smiled to her mom, then waved her hand to her. She knew that her mom waved her back. At least, she was grateful to know that she had the inner contact with her mom.

Most of Iridesca’s high school friends were continuing their study to college, except Iridesca. Actually she really wanted to reach her dream became a teacher, her parents’ financial could supported her to reached her dream. But, Iridesca chose to not continue her study to college because her eyes only could see the darkness. But still, her dream was manifested, at least based on her opinion. She was a teacher for those bagger childrens at the space under the bridge.

She left her home to that place which she called it with “school” for her students around elementary until secondary school ages. Started in the morning, and broke in the afternoon because they needed to work around that place then in the evening, the class started again.

Iridesca clearly remembered about yesterday’s moment. A boy in her ages seems like stared at Iridesca from the distance. Iridesca did not see it, she felt it. Her feeling was so sensitive.

“Are you teaching at here?” that boy asked Iridesca when she could feel him stood beside her. While her students started to leave that place.

“Why? Got a problem?” said Iridesca quickly, she did not want to talk with stranger.

            “Nice, your silhouette is nice.” He mumbled slowly, “no problem, I just asked.” He corrected his sentence. Immeditialy he cursed his broken camera.

            That boy tilted his head then waved his hands in front of Iridesca’s face. He wondered about what was going on with Iridesca’s eyes.

            Iridesca packed her bags and prepared to went home. “Sorry, but what is your purpose? Your voice sounds like your ages are similar to me. I do not teach for your ages.”

That boy held Iridesca’s hand, “A teacher obviously good at explaining. Can you explain about my heart which beat so fast like this?” he put Iridesca’s hand on his chest.

Iridesca released her hands from his, even she could feel that boy’s heart beat faster.

“I am really sorry about that, I am leaving you really now.” Suddenly he left Iridesca awkwardly.

Remembered about that moment turned Iridesca’s mood into bad. But not about her spirit, heard her students’ voice could heal tired and brought a spirit on her.

On the other side in this morning, Gathan prepared himself to went to college quickly when actually he really wanted to visit the place he just met with a girl yesterday.

When Gathan finally arrived to that place, he found out that the class that girl had just ended a moment ago, then he tried to be brave to talk to that girl after yesterday’s “accident”.

“Who is this?” said that girl. Gathan stepped back. How could she knew about his existence? Whereas that girl’s eyes…

“I remember, we did not know each other before. Therefore I am here right now.” Said Gathan.

That girl sighed heavily. “Oh, that’s you.” She picked her bag, indirectly said that she did not want to talk anymore with Gathan.

But Gathan would not give up easily, with his way, he could know that girl’s name; Iridesca Maya.

            After that, they went to a café which located at the opposite of the bridge. Gathan had so many ways to made Iridesca wanted to hung out with him. They had a lot of quality time, then Iridesca realized that Gathan was not that brash. Actually, he was a funny boy with good attitude.

            Because Iridesca’s first impression on Gathan was wrong, she tried to apologize with asking him to accompany her to bought classes property this evening. Gathan accepted it gladly. So, they went to bought them until the sun went down and the rain fell to the ground.

            When Gathan arrived at his house, Hanna stood at the door while her hands were on her waist and gave Gathan the how-dare-are-you look. She worried about Gathan’s condition because he had something unexplainable according to the doctor. But, once again, Gathan had so many ways to conveyed the reasons which made Hanna did not mad at him anymore. She also told her brother about their parents’ upcoming arrival. Gathan really excited to hear that because no words could explain how much he missed his mom and dad.

            On the other side, when Iridesca arrived at her house, her parents were not like usual. Suddenly, when the clock showed 00:00 a.m. they came out with happy faces to gave a surprise to Iridesca because that day was her birthday!

            “Oh my Lord! This is… ah, I really appreciate it. I could not tell how much I love you mom, dad!” She hugged her parents and it meant that she turned 18 officially!

**

            Gathan was being informed about the letter from doctor as the result of his last checked up activity, it told him about his condition right now, it said that he did not let his condition dropped. But today, he would like to see Iridesca at that place because he felt something different when he looked at her eyes. He could see the reflection of his eyes too, felt like they mixed as well. So, Gathan finally met Iridesca at the same place as yesterday. Iridesca accidently told Gathan about her birthday.

            “Oh my God, how could I forget about your birthday?” Gathan was joking about that because actually he did not know about Iridesca’s birth date. Iridesca just laughed and this made her confused like how could Gathan always made Iridesca laughed easily and suddenly forget about her problems?

            At that time, Gathan promised something to Iridesca for her birthday’s gift.

            Time flew and it came to the day Gathan was promised something to do with Iridesca as her birthday’s gift. Gathan had a schedule with her to met up at 03:00 p.m. at the café they usually met. But, it has been an hour Iridesca waited for Gathan’s arrival. She almost got mad until 5 minutes later Gathan came with heavy breath. He told Iridesca that he was from the hospital to get the review check up then picked up his camera from the service center. When Iridesca asked him about what serious problem he got with his healthiness, he did not want to answer it and Iridesca tried to realize that she was not anything in Gathan’s life so she did not have to know what was going on with Gathan.

            Gathan drove Iridesca by his motorcycle to a place which had no pollutions when they can felt the sensation of the beautiful nature.

            “Can you guess which place we just arrived at?” Gathan asked Iridesca nicely.

            Iridesca drew the hands horizontally to felt the fresh air around this place. “Uhm, I can feel the fresh air, waters, and…” she started to walk around. “sand! I know, we are definitely at the beach!”

Gathan appreciate the sensitive sense she had and he let Iridesca to walk around the beach. They shared their minds about the reason why they both loved beach. Iridesca’s view told that she loved beach because she could feel the comfort and suddenly forget about her problems. Gathan’s view told that he loved beach because he usually come to here to relax when he had so much problems. It can be concluded that they loved beach, the sea, and waters, related to rain. They loved rain as well.

            “Do you have something to be told? I can get the line on your sentence that you have a serious problem right now. You know, I am a good listener.” Said Iridesca.

            “Oh, nothing. Calm down, take your time because this is the special day for us. I mean, for you. For your birthday’s gift from me.” Said Gathan nervously.

            Iridesca thanked Gathan, and he said that Iridesca was the only girl who closed with him besides his sister, Hanna. Iridesca felt honored to hear that. Iridesca said that actually she could see him without her eyes functioned normally but with her heart.

            “Iridesca, you need to know. I love you, as my best friend.” Gathan shutted her mouth for a while then continued his sentences. “why did I just called you as my best friend? Because best friend could be completing and understanding each other, always by their sides. Because a friendship meant so much more than a relationship as a couple.”

            “Only as a best friend?”

            “Actually my feelings on you were more than that, but I am afraid…”

            “Tell me.”

            “I  am afraid that in the end, it will not be as beautiful as you have been imagined.” Gathan walked away slowly, it was the hardest words to be said. He let Iridesca with his hands and started to sing her a song titled Home Is In Your Eyes.

            “I want to be holding your hand in the sand by the tire swing, where we used to be, baby you and me. I travel a thousand miles, just so I can see you smile. Feel so far away when you cry, ‘cause home is in your eyes.”

            Iridesca could not hold her feelings, she started to cry. How can it could be complicated? She did not know what was going on, but if she could ask, she would like to be like this with Gathan for the rest of their life. Gathan wiped her tears and he felt guilty to her so he decided to bring Iridesca went home.

            After that moment, Gathan never contact Iridesca, they did not meet up anymore when actually both of them felt lost in the bottom of their hearts. Iridesca tried to stand above her complicated things with Gathan, she lived her life normally although on the other side, she could not lie to herself that she missed Gathan Agasstya.

            A week ago, Gathan’s parents came to his sister’s house. They had a serious topic about Gathan’s condition based on the letter from doctor he just received not a long ago. They started to make a decision which could determined Gathan’s life in the future. So, in the time they have been planned before, Gathan would be on operation to fix his condition. That was the reason why did Gathan decided to lost contact with Iridesca although he knew that it would not be better but at least he could not make the situation became worst if Iridesca knew about his condition.

**

            When the time came, Gathan was ready to be operated in the operating room. His family were complete to gave him support, to showed how care they are to him, meant that they loved him honestly.

            “Hanna.” A moment before the operation will be started, Gathan called his sister.

            “I am always here, by your side.” She came to her beloved brother.

            “Do you still remember about a girl that I have been told you about?”

            “Iridesca Maya, exactly. How can I forget her when you keep talking about her during your days like every day?” she giggled.

            “I am more than serious right now. We can not expect for the best when there will always be the worst situation haunted us, right?” said Gathan. “listen, I love Iridesca Maya when I was around her even she was not around me, but she always there in my heart, it would never change although we had no talking for a month.”

            Hanna listen carefully to her brother, she could see that Gathan’s eyes started wet like she never seen it before. She could tell that Gathan Agasstya was really wanted Hanna to granted his wishes.

            “When the worst situation came to me, when I could not reach my breath anymore, please do it for me; give my eyes to her, Iridesca Maya. Because she needs them more than I should. I love you to granted my wish, I love Iridesca Maya for the rest of my life.” Said Gathan. Hanna could not hold her tears while Gathan gave her an envelope filled with photos he took secretly and the object was all about Iridesca Maya.

            “I would do what you asked me to. I love you, Gathan Agasstya, my beloved brother.” Hanna smiled behind her tears. Immediately, the doctor and nurses started to bring Gathan to do the operation. Hanna, her mom and dad just praying from the outside, hoped that all went well.

            “Iridesca Maya?”

            “That is me. Who is this I am talking with?” Iridesca asked in the telephone.

            “I am Hanna, Gathan’s sister. We need to talk, let’s meet up at the space under the bridge.” Hanna ended up the call. Iridesca could not do anything besides grant Hanna’s wish.

            When they both were at the place they have been planned before, Hanna explained all of these complicated things. She really hoped that Iridesca Maya could do the wishes from Gathan Agasstya. Iridesca did not have another choice, she really loved Gathan and this was the only way to showed it hopefully Gathan would see it from another world.

**

            Iridesca Maya, a teacher for beggars at the space under the bridge started her new life with her new views. She worked so hard for her family, to make her parents proud of her. It has been 2 years since Gathan Agasstya passed away. Since his eyes were on Iridesca’s eyes. Now, she worked at the place where Hanna did her task. About her “school”, she rent so many teachers to help her handed the students until the government gave her an achievement because of her responsibility. She had a new hobby as a photographer in her spare time. She lived her life as Gathan wished.

            Today was the day Gathan Agasstya really leave his beloved people forever. Iridesca went to Gathan’s grave because that was the only one to heal the missing piece in her heart.

            “Gathan Agasstya,” Iridesca called him although there would be no answer.

“Everyone changed. The situation changed. But, these photos you gave to me framed the changes. And this heart, keep the most difficult change to be faced. Losing you, Gathan. And this heart, see you, feel you, although you are still by my side, on another world. I can see you, with your eyes. But, these photos help me to see you with my unconsciousness. Which actually, I could feel you, in my heart, even with my unconsciousness, but with your eyes which has been mine. This is our eyes. I love you for the rest of my life, Gathan Agasstya.”

Epilog : there was no one who wiped Iridesca’s tears, she still tried to face the truth that there would not be another Gathan Agasstya. But, the moments he had captured secretly for Iridesca Maya showed the reflection on their eyes of their love.
